Bowen Therapy
A Gentle Path to Healing
-
Bowen Therapy
Bowen Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive form of bodywork that is fundamentally different from other manual therapies.
It is a holistic, drug-free treatment that supports the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Rather than using forceful manipulation, Bowen Therapy uses precise, gentle movements over muscles and fascia (connective tissue). These subtle signals communicate with the nervous system, helping the body recognise areas of tension, imbalance, or stress.
By working through the fascia and nervous system, Bowen Therapy encourages the body to shift out of “fight or flight” (stress mode) and into “rest and digest” (repair mode). As described by its founder, Tom Bowen, when the correct signals are sent, the body understands that “the emergency is over,” allowing healing and recovery to begin.
Recognised by the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), Bowen Therapy can help relieve pain, reduce everyday stress, and support overall wellbeing.
Because it is exceptionally gentle and adaptable, Bowen Therapy is suitable for people of all ages and physical conditions — including men, women, and children.
It provides a calm, supportive environment for those experiencing:
Acute injuries
Chronic pain
Stress-related tension
Emotional strain
Bowen Therapy works with your body — not against it — encouraging balance, relaxation, and natural healing.

What Happens in a Bowen Therapy Session?
The good news is that you simply lie on the therapy couch for approximately 45 minutes to one hour, wearing comfortable clothing.
A blanket may be placed over you (usually up to your shoulders) to ensure you stay warm and relaxed.
The session typically begins with you lying on your stomach and later moving onto your back. Bowen Therapy can also be performed in a seated position if that is more comfortable for you.
The Bowen Move
The therapist performs distinctive rolling-type moves using their thumbs and fingers at precise points over muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia.
Each move begins by gently taking up the “skin slack” at the starting point. This is followed by a subtle “challenge” — a light pressure that helps the practitioner assess the underlying tissue. The therapist then performs a slow, steady rolling movement over the muscle.
These carefully applied moves are designed to gently stimulate the fascia and surrounding structures. This encourages communication between the body and brain and may support lymphatic drainage and overall balance.
The Importance of the Break
One of the most defining features of a Bowen session is the “break.” Between sets of moves, the therapist will leave the room for approximately two to five minutes.
These rest periods are essential. They allow the nervous system time to process and respond to the treatment. In this quiet, minimal-talk environment, the brain and body can communicate more effectively — internally asking, “How do I feel?”
This pause supports the initiation of the body’s natural healing and repair processes.
Your Treatment Plan
For most issues, an initial course of three sessions is recommended. While many people feel immediate relief, others notice the most significant changes in the days following treatment.
Managing Expectations
As your body begins to rebalance, you may occasionally experience:
Temporary stiffness
Mild muscular aches
A slight headache
This is a normal sign that the body is responding to treatment.
Aftercare
To support the changes initiated during your session:
Stay well-hydrated
Keep gently moving for the next 48 hours
Avoid other types of therapy or massage for 7 days
